Under 18 1 – 2 Reading U18 – Match Report
Our young Gunners suffered a narrow defeat to Reading in our penultimate league fixture on Saturday morning.
Goals either side of the interval gave the visitors control before Louis Zecevic John’s fine finish brought us back into the contest, but Reading held firm to take all three points.
WHAT HAPPENED
Reading made a fast start and took the lead early on from the penalty spot after Tyler Adjei was brought down in the box. Ryan Zie stepped up and confidently fired his effort into the bottom-right corner.
The visitors continued to threaten and nearly doubled their advantage when Kaden Allsop picked out Adjei with an excellent switch of play, but the forward fired over from close range. Moments later, Remi Lupinski produced a sharp save to deny Adjei once again and keep us within touching distance.
We found it difficult to create clear openings during the first half and needed another impressive stop from Lupinski to prevent Reading from extending their lead before the break.
Adam Birchall responded at half-time with a triple substitution, and we looked far brighter after the restart. Emerson Nwaneri almost helped us level proceedings with a dangerous corner towards the back post, but Zecevic John’s header drifted wide.
Instead, Reading struck again. T’Shay St Louis drove to the byline and pulled the ball back for Matthias Ojo, who finished emphatically to double the visitors’ advantage.
Our response was immediate. Substitute Marciniak threaded a clever pass into Zecevic John, who shifted the ball away from his defender before smashing an unstoppable finish beyond the goalkeeper to reduce the deficit.
That goal sparked renewed momentum, and we pushed hard for an equaliser. Nwaneri came close with a powerful effort after cutting inside, only to be denied by an excellent save from the Reading goalkeeper. Shortly afterwards, Maalik Hashi delivered a superb cross into the area, but Teshaun Murisa headed narrowly over from close range.
Deep into stoppage time, we came within inches of rescuing a point when Marciniak’s strike clipped the outside of the post, but Reading managed to hold on and secure victory.
WHAT IT MEANS
The result leaves us with 32 points from 27 league matches.

Our under-18s round off the season on Saturday, May 16, with an away trip to Crystal Palace.
