Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea: Blues halt dreadful six-game losing run at Anfield

Liverpool and Chelsea battled to a 1-1 draw at Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday.

The visitors carved out the first opportunity in the third minute after Marc Cucurella found Joao Pedro, but he dragged his effort wide.

Three minutes later, Ryan Gravenberch opened the scoring after he was found at the edge of the area by Rio Nguomha before finding the top corner in fine fashion.

Moments later, Virgil van Dijk squandered a glorious opportunity to double the Reds’ advantage after he met Dominik Szoboszlai’s cross at the back post, but he sent his effort just over the bar.

At the other end, Cole Palmer slipped Joao Pedro through on goal, but Giorgi Mamardashvili came off his line quickly to gather.

Minutes later, Levi Colwill played Cucurella through on goal, but Mamardashvili got down well to keep out his low strike.

In the 35th minute, Enzo Fernandez restored parity for Chelsea after his low free-kick crept all the way in.

Moments later, the Argentine wasted a golden chance to put Chelsea ahead after racing onto Moises Caicedo’s through ball, only to be denied by Mamardashvili.

Shortly after the restart, Palmer thought he had put the visitors ahead with a close-range finish, only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside.

At the other end, Liverpool thought they had a goal of their own after Curtis Jones headed home from close range, but he was denied by the offside flag.

On the hour mark, Szoboszlai could’ve fired the Reds ahead with a long-range effort, but his strike was palmed away by Filip Jorgensen.

Minutes later, the Hungarian tried his luck from a distance, but his powerful strike struck the post.

At the other end, Joao Pedro wriggled his way into the area before sending his curling effort well off target.

In the 80th minute, Van Dijk almost gave the hosts the lead after he met Szoboszlai’s corner, but his header came off the woodwork.

On the stroke of full-time, Chelsea appealed for a penalty after Joao Pedro went down in the area under the challenge of Jeremie Frimpong, but after a VAR check, nothing was given.
