Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea: Fernandez ends Blues’ losing streak and dents Reds’ Champions League push
Chelsea ended their six-game losing streak in the Premier League after coming from behind to secure a 1-1 draw at Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.
Despite the result, the Reds remain fourth, one point clear of Aston Villa who face Burnley on Sunday, while Chelsea remain ninth.
Liverpool opened the scoring in the sixth minute. Rio Ngumoha found Ryan Gravenberch, who curled beyond the outstretched Filip Jorgensen.
Virgil van Dijk should have doubled the Reds’ lead in the 10th minute, firing over from the edge of the six-yard box.
Liverpool had Giorgi Mamardashvili to thank on the half-hour hour mark. The Georgian quickly came off his line, preventing Marc Cucurella from finding the leveller.
Chelsea eventually equalised in the 35th minute as Enzo Fernandez’s free-kick evaded everyone, before settling into the bottom corner.
Moments later, the Argentine almost put the visitors ahead after running behind the Liverpool defence, but hit his effort straight at Mamardashvili.
Four minutes after the restart, Cole Palmer thought he had put the Blues ahead, but his goal was ruled out offside.
Liverpool also saw a disallowed goal in the 57th minute when Curtis Jones headed in, but Cody Gakpo was deemed offside in the build-up.
Jorgensen was then called into action, parrying Dominic Szoboszlai’s powerful drive over the bar, before the Hungarian struck the woodwork in the 70th minute.
Chelsea later threatened as Joao Pedro showed good footwork inside the area, before curling wide.
The Reds came close to finding the winner, with Van Dijk’s header hitting the crossbar.
The fixture attacking tempo fizzled out as the two sides settled for a draw.
