Liverpool fans make feelings clear to Arne Slot with furious reaction to Chelsea decision

Liverpool manager Arne Slot made a substitution with the score at 1-1 against Chelsea, only to receive immediate negative feedback from the Anfield crowd and not get the desired impact

Arne Slot was booed by the Liverpool supporters after deciding to substitute Rio Ngumoha against Chelsea. The Reds were level at 1-1 when Slot brought on Alexander Isak for the 17-year-old winger at Anfield.

Ryan Gravenberch put the home side ahead early on with a curling effort before their lead was cancelled out when Enzo Fernandez’s free-kick drifted in at the far post. With the fans getting irritated by the performance as Liverpool faced a side who had lost their previous six Premier League matches, Slot made a call.

He replaced Ngumoha with Isak in the 67th minute and immediately knew what the fans felt about it. Boos rang out around Anfield as the arrival of the big-money summer signing off the bench went down very badly.

“You don’t hear a reaction like that at Anfield often, but I can understand,” Ally McCoist said on TNT Sports. “I actually thought it would’ve just been a straight swap for Cody Gakpo, but I know he can play out on that left-hand side and come in off the left as well.”

The move didn’t work out as Slot had hoped, with the game ending 1-1. To make matters worse, the Liverpool supporters then delivered another volley of boos at the full-time whistle.

Ngumoha has been a bone of contention between the fans and Slot this season. The young winger has been a bright spark when he has featured, but the Liverpool boss has been reluctant to over-play him.

Slot was delighted by his impact in the 2-0 win over Fulham last month and explained his take on the situation of managing his minutes – and expectations.

“I think I’ve said a few weeks, maybe months ago, one or two months ago, that his playing time would increase because he got stronger and stronger, showed more and more when he came in, but also in training sessions, that it wasn’t only a nice trick, but there was more and more end product to what he did,” he said.

“There was more and more power to what he did, which is needed if you play against the best defenders in the world. And I don’t think anyone is surprised that at this moment of time he scored his first goal (at Anfield).

“He has such a special quality which you don’t see a lot in football anymore: dominating the one-v-one situation. And that’s exactly what he did when he scored his goal, making the ball free by twisting and turning and then hitting it in like a Mo Salah finish, I would say.

“It’s something I’m not surprised to see because in training sessions during the last month we saw more and more that he got more and more power to hit the ball as powerful as he did today.

“And yeah, that’s why he had now three starts in the last seven or eight games, I think. I don’t know exactly, but Wolves and Tottenham and this one. Pleasing to see that he did what we know makes him special, that’s dominating one-v-one situations.”
