Mateus Fernandes probably took one too many touches as he bore down on David Raya in the Arsenal net.

By getting closer to the goalkeeper, Fernandes gave himself less room to place the ball on either side of Raya.

However, the West Ham midfielder could still have passed the ball into the far corner or through Raya’s legs.

Instead, Fernandes aimed for the near post and lifted the ball into the Arsenal goalkeeper’s outstretched foot.

“He has to score. The goalkeeper is getting all the credit, but he has to score,” Roy Keane said on Sky Sports after the game.

Meanwhile, former Arsenal striker Ian Wright explained where Fernandes went wrong in failing to take his chance.

“Of course, David Raya is in the way, but he should not have any chance of saving that,” Wright added.

“He could flick it into his right foot, but he takes another touch. The goalkeeper was rooted; he literally can’t move if you play that to his right side.

“He takes another touch and another one; he gets closer. You have to find the space. (He takes) another touch. Where’s he going?”

He continued: “No one is saying that it’s not an unbelievable save, but he’s given him an opportunity to save it. He should not have done that.”

Having missed his chance to put the Hammers 1-0 up with 10 minutes to go, Leandro Trossard scored moments later.

Wilson’s disallowed goal in injury time meant that Arsenal came away from the London Stadium with a controversial victory.

West Ham must now rely on Leeds and/or Chelsea doing them a favour by beating Tottenham in the next week.
