It feels like the Xabi Alonso to Chelsea story has moved up a few gears over the past 24 hours or so. There has been mention of interest for the last several days but now, it feels like that is becoming more concrete. Otherwise, so much news would not come out, from several reliable sources, at around the same time.

There have been rumours about positive talks taking place between Alonso’s camp and Chelsea. There has even been mention that the Spaniard is now open to managing the Blues.

Of course, that comes after news broke that BlueCo were willing to bend their model and hand someone like Alonso more control over football matters, including making transfer decisions. That is believed to be vital if the Blues want to have any chance of convincing the Spaniard to take the Stamford Bridge job.

With so much noise around the situation, it might be almost too much to make sense of it all. Fortunately, Fabrizio Romano has dropped a late-night update, clarifying the entire situation.

Fabrizio Romano clarifies Xabi Alonso to Chelsea situation as rumours go overdrive

While speaking on his YouTube channel about the rising rumours about Alonso and the Chelsea job, Fabrizio Romano said:

“Then many of you today asking me, Xabi Alonso to Chelsea, here we go? Xabi Alonso to Chelsea is happening? Guys, what I can tell you is that the reason behind all these stories on Xabi Alonso in the last 24 hours is that Xabi Alonso, better say those close to Xabi Alonso, opened doors to a chapter in Premier League. So the real change in the Xabi Alonso story is that now Xabi is open to trying a chapter in Premier League. Xabi Alonso would be open even to take the job at Chelsea in case they can find a good way to go ahead together.

So Xabi Alonso would open doors to a Chelsea possibility. this is why you see many stories today. But Chelsea, according to my information, are yet to decide who is the manager they want and they want to be very careful in the process they are having internally to decide who is the right man after Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior decision.

So my understanding is that Chelsea are still discussing internally. There is Andoni Iraola who, same as Xabi Alonso, is rejecting proposals from abroad because he wants to continue in Premier League, he wants to be a Premier League manager next season. So Andoni Iraola would be ready to have an opportunity, another opportunity after Bournemouth, in the Premier League next season.

Xabi Alonso is opening doors, so Chelsea are assessing all the potential candidates, all the potential names to become the new manager. But Chelsea want to be 100% sure. So before Chelsea go all in for a manager, they want to make sure is the right man for the job. So this is the reason. Xabi Alonso, Iraola, Chelsea will have conversations and then decide what’s the best way to advance for the managerial position.”

So, it is once again underlined that nothing is for certain yet. Chelsea are not even 100% sure yet that Alonso is the right man, by the sound of those comments.

Chelsea’s fans are now expecting Alonso appointment

It might be a fluid situation yet, even though all the rumours point towards Alonso getting the job. That being said, it will come as a disappointment to the supporters if the Spaniard is not handed the post after all this media frenzy around the situation.

It is no secret that most Chelsea fans would like to see Alonso as the next manager of the club. He has the big name. He has the proven success at a club like Bayer Leverkusen. And while things did not work out at Real Madrid, getting to that level and working with those players should have only made him better.

All things considered, Alonso is someone Chelsea fans would fee safe with getting the job. That would not have been said will all the other managers that BlueCo have appointed so far. Even Mauricio Pochettino, who had experience at clubs like Tottenham Hotspur and PSG, did not convince everybody.

Now, this is not to say that Alonso would be a guaranteed success at Chelsea. But he has as good a chance as anyone who has been mentioned so far with regard to the job.
