Chelsea news: Chelsea‘s long and increasingly frantic search for a permanent head coach took a notable step forward this week, as the Blues held direct talks with Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, per a report from The Sun. The west London club have been without a settled manager since dismissing Enzo Maresca and, most recently, caretaker Liam Rosenior, leaving Calum McFarlane to oversee first-team duties until a full-time appointment arrives.
Iraola has guided Bournemouth to the brink of historic European qualification this season, a run of results that placed him firmly on Chelsea’s shortlist. Crucially, both Iraola and Xabi Alonso share the same agency, IDUB, and that connection has reportedly been used to open initial discussions with both coaches.
Alonso, 44 years old, has been out of work since Real Madrid dismissed him in January, just seven months into the job, after a dip in form following a strong opening run that included a Clásico victory over Barcelona. Meanwhile, Marco Silva of Fulham and Oliver Glasner also remain under consideration, although Fulham have offered Silva a lucrative new contract to stay at Craven Cottage. Chelsea aim to finalise their appointment before the World Cup begins in mid-June. Despite two approaches from Crystal Palace, Iraola rejected both and confirmed he will leave Bournemouth when his contract expires this summer.
