Man Utd Face Major Competition to Sign West Ham Star

As we edge closer to the end of the 2025/26 Premier League season, the summer transfer window becomes more and more of a factor. Manchester United are already looking to bolster their squad – and they have a top midfielder in their sights.

West Ham United are currently staring down the barrel of relegation, but Mateus Fernandes has proven to be an excellent signing for the Hammers. They have had their fair share of woes this season, but none of them have been provided by the Portuguese midfielder.

According to a report from Sky Sports, United are looking to strike a deal for the player in the coming months. They have several other targets in mind, such as Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, but have ‘stepped up’ their pursuit of Fernandes in the last few days.

Unsurprisingly, this has sparked the interest of several top clubs in and around the Premier League. United aren’t the only ones in the hunt – they will be joined by some major competition.

Portuguese outlet Apito Final reported that, along with United, Manchester City also want to secure the services of Fernandes before the transfer window slams shut.

Likewise, according to The Sun, PSG are also keen to bring Fernandes on board – they went as far as to suggest that talks had taken place between the two parties.

Furthermore, back in March, Sports Boom claimed that Arsenal and Liverpool were also amongst the clubs looking to sign him up. Despite this, they also claimed that the Hammers will demand £65 million in order for him to leave the club – even if they are relegated at the end of the season.

West Ham certainly do not want to lose Fernandes, but their hands will be tied if an offer comes in that matches their valuation of the player.

Despite being just 21 years of age, Mateus Fernandes has already shown an impressive level of maturity in the Premier League. He has already found his goalscoring edge, something that will only grow with experience.

Furthermore, he is also a capable and willing to play in any midfield role. This season, he has functioned as a central midfielder, a defensive midfielder and as an attacking midfielder. Additionally, he can also play on either wing.

Such pliability has not gone unnoticed. In a world where more and more is asked of elite players, being able to field multiple positions is vital when the squad needs to be rotated.

Most notably, Fernandes has played in all but two of West Ham’s Premier League games this season – the two games he missed took place before he was officially signed. Since then, he has featured in every game for them, only once failing to make the starting lineup.

Stamina and fitness are crucial in today’s game. Fernandes is certainly fit enough – furthermore, he can back it up with some fantastic technical attributes.
