Premier League Rivals in Transfer Pursuit of La Liga Ace
A pair of top Premier League clubs – Chelsea and Manchester United – have a La Liga star in their sights ahead of the summer transfer window.
Ander Barrenetxea has led an impressive season in La Liga with Real Sociedad. Most notably, he scored the fastest goal in Copa del Rey final history against Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone’s men mounted a fightback, but Sociedad would eventually win on penalties.
As such, his killer instinct inside the box has caught the eye of two of the Premier League’s biggest clubs, according to a report from Spanish outlet Marca.
On top of this, he is also set to take part in the 2026 World Cup as part of Luis de la Fuente’s Spain squad. Barrenetxea’s stock has never been higher than it is right now.
Who are the suitors for Barrenetxea?
Because of this, he could cost either the Red Devils or the Blues a tidy sum of money. According to Fichajes, Sociedad won’t let him go without a fee of at least 75 million Euros (£65 million). United, on the other hand, are only willing to cough up 60 million Euros (£52 million) as things stand.
It is unclear how much Chelsea are offering to pay at the moment, though Sociedad’s valuation will remain the same for them.
Is Barrenetxea worth such a gargantuan transfer fee? Let’s take a look at his stats from this season and try to figure it out.
Ander Barrenetxea’s 2025/26 La Liga stats
| Games | Goals | Assists | YellowCards | RedCards | |
| A. Barrenetxea | 29 | 3 | 5 | 4 | 0 |
As you can see, Barrenetxea’s La Liga stats from this season are rather modest – especially for a player commanding such a lofty asking price.
However, the more one examines his situation, the more it begins to make sense. First of all, Barrenetxea is only 24 years of age – he still has plenty of developing to do and has shown some incredibly promising signs.
Furthermore, he is under contract at Sociedad until the summer of 2030. They can afford to hold out for now – his current deal won’t expire for another four years. By that time, Barrenetxea will be 28 years old.
On top of this, Barrenetxea has been at Sociedad for his entire professional career. He joined the club in 2013, when he was just 12 years of age, going on to make his debut for the senior team in 2018. Since then, he has made 179 La Liga appearances for the club, scoring 17 goals along the way.
What does Ander Barrenetxea offer?
Both Chelsea and Manchester United are looking to bolster their wide attacking options in the summer. United’s problem is a lack of depth, while Chelsea’s main issue is a dearth in quality.
United have just two quality wingers at the club at the momemt – Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo. Both are fantastic players, but the Red Devils lack solid backup options. Patrick Dorgu looks to be too injury prone, while Matheus Cunha is more suited to playing as a striker or as an attacking midfielder.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have plenty of wide players – but none of them have been particularly inspiring this season. Only Estevao has managed to capture the imagination of the public and he is out until the start of next season with an injury.
Therefore, there is a place for Barrenetxea in both of their squads – but can either of the two teams complete a deal? Time will tell.
