David Moyes makes Seamus Coleman position clear and provides Idrissa Gueye injury update

The Everton boss has been facing the press ahead of the Blues’ final home match of the season against Sunderland on Sunday.

David Moyes has admitted that Everton have offered Seamus Coleman ‘every job under the sun’ following the announcement that the Blues’ captain will finish his playing days with the club at the end of the season.

Coleman, 37, has spent 17 seasons on Merseyside after signing from Irish outfit Sligo Rovers for £60,000 in January 2009, but he now has a maximum of two matches left where he could be involved.

A statement from Everton earlier today confirmed that Coleman had been offered a role on the coaching staff but was taking his time over the coming weeks to decide whether to accept it or continue his playing career elsewhere.

And now Blues boss Moyes has explained the situation further while showering praise on his club captain.

Speaking about the right-back in his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon ahead of Sunday’s home match against Sunderland, Moyes admitted that the Irishman could be his best-ever bargain singing. Moyes said: “I don’t know what anybody else would say but I would say it was right up there.

“I get the praise for it but I have to praise the recruitment team at that time who went and spotted him in Ireland and brought him over and forced me into doing it. He’s been a great servant for us, he really has been.

“You want to bring in players who are good players for your team, but to stay at the club for 17 years… I missed quite a part of Seamus’ time here as well. But I think recently he has been the glue that has kept things together behind the scenes. He needs a lot of credit as a human being for what he’s done for Everton.”

Speaking about Coleman’s immediate future, Moyes added: “We’ve offered Seamus every job there is from groundsman to assistant. You name it, he’s had every opportunity. but the thing I admire about about Seamus is that he wants to keep playing and he wants to keep playing for his country.

“He’s got a couple of friendly games coming up during the summer time which he wants to keep ready for and he’s in good physical condition. It would be easy for him to settle down and say ‘I’m not going to do it’.

“There will always be a desk for him (here) when his time comes. There will be no doubt about that.”

Everton are without a win in a five matches, which has seriously dented their European qualification hopes ahead of the final home fixture of the season against Sunderland on Sunday (3pm kick-off).

And Moyes has confirmed that they will have to take on Regis Le Bris’ side without midfielder Idrissa Gueye, who is still recovering from an ankle injury.

Moyes said: “Idrissa is not fit for the game. He’s back on the grass. He’s just not available for this game. There’s an outside chance that he could play against Tottenham.”

Moyes was also asked whether following Coleman’s departure from the first-team squad he would exercise the option to extend Gueye’s contract by another year, but the Blues boss played his cards close to his chest.

He said: “Losing Seamus is big blow but we’ll talk about Gana in the coming weeks. We’re on with quite a lot of business behind the scenes. We’re trying to be a club that goes about it quietly. We don’t want to be shouting about it and talk about it in the media until it’s done.”
