We’ve been playing matches against Burnley since 1896, but there have been many memorable encounters between the grand old clubs in much more recent times.

Whether we’ve faced each other in cup action, or during the Clarets’ various stays in the top-flight, there has been a mixture of heavy home wins, topsy-turvy encounters and great goals.

We’ve picked out five recent clashes to whet the appetite ahead of the latest instalment:

March 8, 2009
Arsenal 3-0 Burnley

We made it through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup thanks to three goals out of the top drawer to knock out the Championship side. The opener came on 25 minutes when Carlos Vela nutmegged Clarke Carlisle to charge through on goal, and the Mexican’s delicious dink over Brian Jensen put us in front.

Better was to come five minutes after half-time when Alex Song clipped a pass over the defence for Eduardo, who executed a brilliant improvised volley off his outstep that fizzed into the net, and to wrap things up, a fine passing move involving William Gallas, Theo Walcott, Song and Emmanuel Eboue led to the latter firing home a third six minutes from time to complete a swashbuckling display.

Arsenal 3-1 Burnley

We moved two points behind leaders Manchester United thanks to this win over Brian Laws’ side. Cesc Fabregas handed us a 34th-minute lead when he latched onto a Samir Nasri pass to slip the ball between Jensen’s legs, but David Nugent equalised after capitalising on some hesitancy in the home defence to lob Manuel Almunia.

However, on the hour mark, Walcott produced the game’s crowning moment when he cut inside from the right flank and produced a precise finish from the edge of the area to put us back in front, with victory secured in stoppage time when Andrey Arshavin drilled in our third and kept us in the title hunt.

Arsenal 2-1 Burnley

In a match packed with incidents, including two penalties awarded past the 90-minute mark, we managed to come out on top again over Dyche’s team. Things were going to plan when Shkodran Mustafi headed us into a 59th-minute lead, but six minutes later Granit Xhaka was red-carded for a challenge on Stephen Defour to put the result in jeopardy.

And when Francis Coquelin fouled Ashley Barnes in the 93rd minute to allow Andre Gray to tuck home a penalty it looked like points would be dropped, but when Ben Mee was penalised for a high boot, Sanchez showed real coolness to produce a Paneka from 12 yards to rescue the win for his side.

Arsenal 5-0 Burnley

We produced a performance befitting of the occasion as Arsene Wenger took charge of his final game at Emirates Stadium. The Clarets would secure a seventh-place finish in the table after an impressive season, but were no match for us on this emotionally-charged afternoon as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette put us 2-0 ahead by the break.

Saed Kolasinac then arrowed in a third before Alex Iwobi found the top corner, and Aubameyang had the last word when he made it 5-0 with 15 minutes still to go, ensuring that our iconic French manager’s 606th and final home game ended in style.

Arsenal 3-1 Burnley

Leandro Trossard scored our 1,000th goal at Emirates Stadium to set us on our way to all three points over Vincent Kompany’s team. After a tight first half, the Belgian went in bravely at the far post to break the deadlock in stoppage time, but within nine minutes of the restart, the visitors drew level through a deflected Josh Brownhill effort.

However, we swiftly got back in front thanks to our set-piece prowess when William Saliba headed home a Trossard corner, and then Oleksandr Zinchenko acrobatically scored our third when another dangerous corner wasn’t fully cleared. Despite Fabio Vieira being shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Brownhill, we saw out time comfortably to move up to second place in the table.
