Part of Axel Disasi’s West Ham mission fails as official statement made

Since signing on loan from Chelsea in late January, Disasi has had a transformative impact at West Ham, significantly improving their defence.

Indeed, the Frenchman has been such a success that West Ham want to sign him permanently, although that of course depends on the club securing Premier League survival.

This season can yet be a success for Disasi, although his dream of going to another World Cup with France is over.

Disasi officially left out of France’s World Cup squad

Part of the season the defender joined West Ham was to get back to playing football in time to make a bid for France’s World Cup squad.

Maxence Lacroix of Crystal Palace has been included as a back-up central defender instead.

Speaking shortly after signing for the club, he said: “That’s part of my goals as well. That’s why I’m here, to come back to the national team.”

He formed part of the 2022 squad who reached the World Cup final, making his senior debut for his country during their group stage defeat to Tunisia.

In total, the 28-year-old has five caps for his country but he has been left out of the squad who will travel to the United States, Canada and Mexico for this summer’s tournament.

Alphonse Areola, who won the World Cup with France in 2018 and also formed part of the 2022 squad, has been left out too after losing his place at West Ham earlier this year.

It is a shame for Disasi, who has been excellent from pretty much the first minute he arrived here in east London.

Hopefully, he can still end this season on a high note by helping keep West Ham up.
