Former boss Steven Gerrard joked he was wearing ‘Rangers blue’ during a TV appearance amid rising speculation over an Ibrox return.
The Liverpool icon has been out of work since leaving Al-Ettifaq in January 2025, with the Saudi side battling against relegation from the Pro League.
Before Danny Rohl was named Russell Martin’s successor in October last year, Gerrard was in talks with Rangers owners Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe of 49ers Enterprises but walked away from a blockbuster return to the Glasgow giants after several rounds of discussions.
The Liverpool icon earned hero status during his time in the Ibrox dugout after he ended Celtic’s stranglehold on the Scottish Premiership title in 2021. Since then, Gerrard has endured disappointing spells at Aston Villa and in Saudi.
Despite knocking back Rangers, the 45-year-old stated that he wanted a “passionate” crowd and the chance to claim silverware in his next job – like he had at Ibrox.
Last week, he strongly hinted a quick-fire decision is looming over a return to the dugout – as he admitted he could miss October’s All Star Legends clash between Liverpool and Manchester United in Malaysia.
Rohl is facing major pressure after the season petered out with four defeats from five Premiership post-split fixtures, alongside a public spat with outgoing captain James Tavernier.
The German has already had a vote of confidence from chairman Cavenagh – but speculation has surged again after Gerrard’s appearance on TNT Sports.
The legendary midfielder was on punditry duties as Manchester City overcame Chelsea in the FA Cup final.
After being teased for an Everton-styled blue suit, Gerrard was quick to make a correction: “I just picked the first one I seen, but classic navy – you know what I mean?
“This is a different blue. A Rangers blue – this is Glasgow Rangers.”
That has been picked up Ibrox diehards online who want to see the ex-gaffer make a comeback.
A fan said: “He goes on about us more than Liverpool these days, just get him up the road already.” Another added: “Give him the job.”
One punter speculated on X: “Saying it with a smile as if he knows somethings happening.”
