As per the latest transfer news, Jesse Derry is closing in on a season-long loan to Sporting, with Chelsea set to confirm a new contract for the highly rated winger. His breakthrough campaign turned heads across Europe, with Bayern Munich among the interested clubs.
Jesse Derry set for Sporting move as Chelsea confirm new deal
As reported by BBC Sport, a season-long move to Sporting is edging closer for Jesse Derry. There is no buy option built into the deal. The agreement follows the Blues’ decision to reward the 19-year-old with fresh terms. That reward came after an encouraging first season in senior football.
He still needs to complete a medical first. Once that happens, the switch should move quickly. In the meantime, Chelsea are preparing for an arrival too. Geovany Quenda, currently at Sporting, is set to arrive for around £40m this summer. The deal continues a productive working relationship between the two clubs.
Quenda will enter a crowded forward line at Stamford Bridge. Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian, Jamie Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho already occupy that forward line. Garnacho, however, is only available for a permanent sale. As reported by BBC Sport, Chelsea have ruled out a loan exit for the Argentine winger, at least for now. That congestion explains the logic behind a temporary move elsewhere.
Jesse Derry overcame an injury scare during his breakthrough season
Senior involvement for Jesse Derry stretched to three outings last season. The standout came via a top-flight start in the Premier Leagueaway to Nottingham Forest. He was substituted before half-time. A clash of heads forced him off for treatment.
The winger recovered well from the incident. He returned to full training within a matter of weeks. By the last game of the season away at Sunderland, he was back among the substitutes. It was a clear sign he remained part of the first-team picture.
As reported by Yahoo Sports, Jesse Derry originally arrived at Stamford Bridge from Crystal Palace last summer. He turned down a professional contract at Selhurst Park to make the move. He is also the son of Shaun Derry, a former Crystal Palace and Leeds midfielder. That family background perhaps explains his composure on the ball, even at such a young age.

A fresh long-term contract and the road back to Stamford Bridge
As reported by Yahoo Sports, the fresh terms agreed this week run until 2032. That long deal shows real faith in Jesse Derry as a future first-team player. Both Bayern Munich and Juventus showed interest before Chelsea locked in the new terms. In the end, though, the deal ended any talk of an early exit elsewhere. The extension gave both sides clarity heading into a busy summer window.

| FA Cup | 2 | 0 | 0 |

| Premier League International Cup | 2 | 1 | 1 |
Sporting have built a strong reputation in Europe for developing emerging talent. Regular first-team football in a competitive league should aid his growth considerably. The move also offers early exposure to Champions League football at this stage of his career. Should the loan go well, his name could resurface in the transfer market again next summer. By then, he could be a genuine option under head coach Xabi Alonso.
For now, though, the priority is simple. He needs regular, competitive senior football away from a crowded Stamford Bridge attack. A good year in Portugal, playing often and testing himself in Europe, would represent clear progress. Supporters will be hoping the wait for a first-team recall does not take long.
