Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez is set to be in the heart of Argentina’s engine room when England face their old rivals on Wednesday night in the World Cup semi-final. Fernandez moved to Stamford Bridge for a club-record fee following the 2022 World Cup, which his country won, and has been a key figure ever since.

The 25-year-old, while no doubt one of the most talented midfielders in the game, has been something of a polarising figure, however.

From his sprawling mansion and rocky relationship to a major controversy and an ongoing transfer saga, Mirror Football takes a closer look at the former Benfica star.

Enzo Fernandez’s home

Fernandez and his partner, Valentina Cervantes, gave fans a rare glimpse into their lavish London home recently. The couple, who share two children together, let Argentine TV show ‘Por El Mundo’ take a look around their impressive mansion.

The sprawling residence boasts an array of impressive amenities. These include a well-stocked pantry, a spacious kitchen, large windows, a heated treehouse for the children and an outdoor swimming pool.

Valentina, a social media influencer, said: “We moved recently to this house. We’re always moving because Enzo really likes changing houses. He says it renews his energy, so that’s why we moved recently.”

“It’s modern, and it lets in a lot of natural light. We have a pool, but I don’t know who in England thought of building an outdoor pool. Even if it’s heated, you’d freeze!”

Enzo Fernandez’s rocky relationship

Fernandez and Valentina have weathered a stormy period over the past few years. Their relationship generated headlines after they decided to separate 2024 after he reportedly told her he no longer wished to be with her.

The couple’s break-up was made official in October that year, with Valentina admitting that they’d decided to put some space between them. Fernandez was then romantically linked to Argentine rapper Nicki Nicole and model Pampita Ardohain, though both women denied any entanglement.

Reports emerged in early 2025 suggesting Fernandez and Valentina had got back together. She made the reconciliation official by posting a snap on Instagram.

When questioned about her break-up and reconciliation with Fernandez on Multitalenttv’s ‘Don’t Think So Much’, Valentina said: “Second chances always come, generally with anyone. Because we’re human beings and we can make mistakes.

“No more third chances, there’s no third or fourth. We’re doing very well now; we’ve known each other for a long time. Enzo looks at me now and knows what’s going on with me.” They now appear happy together once again, with Valentina supporting her man at the World Cup in North America.

Enzo Fernandez racism storm

Chelsea were rocked by footage of an alleged racist chant sung by Fernandez and his Argentina team-mates in July 2024. The midfielder posted a video of himself and his colleagues singing a song aimed at the French national team after their 1-0 win over Colombia in the Copa America final.

Fernandez apologised for the alleged offensive song. However, his Chelsea team-mates, Frenchmen Malo Gusto, Axel Disasi and Wesley Fofana, appeared to unfollow the Argentine on Instagram. The latter even posted the video on his social channels with the caption: “Football in 2024: uninhibited racism”.

The chant contained alleged racist and transphobic diction. Apologising, Fernandez said: “I want to apologise sincerely for a video posted on my Instagram channel during the national team celebrations, the song includes highly offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words.

“I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologise for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations. That video, that moment, those words, do not reflect my beliefs or my character. I am truly sorry.” Chelsea issued a statement confirming that an “internal disciplinary procedure” was also underway.

Enzo Fernandez’s Chelsea transfer fury

Former Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior confirmed in April that Fernandez would miss an FA Cup tie against Port Vale after “a line was crossed” after the Argentine talked up a move to Real Madrid.

Fernandez said: “I’d like to live in Spain. I really like Madrid; it reminds me of Buenos Aires. Players live where they want. I’d live in Madrid. I get by in English, but I’d be more comfortable in Spanish.”

Real have since confirmed they are not in talks over a move. New Blues boss Xabi Alonso has claimed he wants Fernandez to stay at Stamford Bridge.

Alonso responded affirmatively when asked whether he wanted to keep the midfielder. He added: “We have spoken. But, as you can understand, what we said will remain private.”
