Xabi Alonso confirms Chelsea transfer plan as five players face decisions – Read Chelsea F.C.

Chelsea’s summer transfer plans are beginning to take shape as Xabi Alonso assesses the squad he inherited at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have already signed Marco Palestra and welcomed Geovany Quenda into the first-team group. However, further additions and several departures remain possible before the window closes.

Chelsea are prioritising defensive reinforcements, with Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarría among the leading targets. The club have also shown interest in Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix.

Alonso must balance those pursuits with decisions over Enzo Fernández, Alejandro Garnacho, Nicolas Jackson, Trevoh Chalobah and the remaining fringe players.

Reuters reported that Alonso wants greater hunger and attention to detail after Chelsea finished tenth in the Premier League last season. The manager wants a stronger identity and a more united squad rather than another complete rebuild.

Chelsea prioritise defensive reinforcements

Chelsea’s most obvious vacancy is on the left side of defence following Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid.

Chavarría would provide an experienced natural left-back who can also operate as a wing-back. Chelsea have held talks with Rayo, but the Spanish club want a package close to his reported £21.5million release clause.

Jorrel Hato can cover the position, while Quenda offers another option in a more attacking role. Alonso would still benefit from a specialist capable of starting immediately.

Lacroix is another player under consideration. The France international has the pace to defend larger spaces and could suit Alonso’s preference for an aggressive defensive line.

As Read Chelsea examined following Alonso’s first training session, the manager has already started assessing the balance of his squad through a combination of possession work and fitness drills.

Chelsea could also consider another midfielder after selling Andrey Santos to Manchester United. The Brazilian offered energy, ball carrying and defensive cover, despite never establishing himself as a regular at Stamford Bridge.

Alonso makes Chelsea player stance clear

Chelsea’s outgoing business could prove just as important as their recruitment.

Garnacho is attracting interest following a difficult first season at the club. Chelsea are open to a permanent sale, while Alonso has acknowledged discussions surrounding the winger’s future.

Jackson will receive another opportunity. Alonso has confirmed that the striker is expected to join Chelsea’s pre-season tour after returning from his loan spell at Bayern Munich.

A talkSPORT report detailing Alonso’s early transfer decisions also confirmed that the manager wants Fernández to remain at Stamford Bridge. Alonso has already spoken privately with the Argentina international following links with Real Madrid.

Chalobah’s position remains less certain. Crystal Palace and clubs in Italy have shown interest, although Chelsea would require a significant offer to sell another academy graduate.

Axel Disasi, Benoît Badiashile and Filip Jørgensen could also leave if suitable proposals arrive.

Chelsea need quality rather than another overhaul

Chelsea’s strategy should now focus on improving the starting side rather than adding more players without defined roles.

A specialist left-back would solve an obvious issue. Another centre-back could provide Alonso with the pace required to play higher up the pitch.

Midfield recruitment may depend on whether Chelsea believe the existing options can cover Santos’ departure. Fernández and Moisés Caicedo remain central to Alonso’s plans, but depth behind them could become a concern.

Read Chelsea previously assessed the consequences of selling Santos, with the deal delivering another major profit while removing a player who could have suited Alonso’s football.

Chelsea still have time to complete their work, but the direction is clearer. Alonso wants to keep Fernández, assess Jackson and strengthen the defence while allowing several fringe players to leave.

The remaining challenge is turning those priorities into a balanced squad before the Premier League campaign begins.
