Chelsea open to loaning out defender Mamadou Sarr
The 20-year-old defender is attracting interest from elsewhere despite the club’s preference for a Premier League switch.
According to the London Evening StandardChelsea have not entirely ruled out keeping Sarr at Stamford Bridge, and Alonso is expected to sit down with the player to discuss his future before any final decision is made.
Sarr joined Chelsea last summer in a £12m deal from fellow BlueCo club Strasbourg, where he had served as captain, and was part of Enzo Maresca’s squad that lifted the Club World Cup. He returned to Strasbourg ahead of the 2025-26 season before being recalled by Chelsea on deadline day during the January transfer window. Since coming back to west London, however, he has featured just six times in all competitions and was left out of the squad entirely for May’s FA Cup final.
His most eye-catching outing in a Chelsea shirt came in the Champions League last-16 clash against Paris Saint-Germain at Stamford Bridge, when Liam Rosenior handed him a surprise start. Sarr struggled to contain Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and was substituted at half-time as PSG went on to win 3-0, an experience that underlined the gulf between Sarr’s current level and the demands of Champions League football at the highest level.
Chelsea are expected to see significant defensive movement this summer regardless of Sarr’s situation, with the club also open to a permanent departure for Trevoh Chalobah.
The England international, who is keen on a move away from English football, has attracted interest from several clubs, including Serie A side Como, as Alonso continues to reshape his options at the back ahead of what promises to be a busy remainder of the transfer window for Chelsea’s defensive department.
Sarr’s versatility and pedigree at academy level in France mean he retains admirers domestically and abroad, even if his first eighteen months in England have not gone entirely to plan.
