Why Tottenham have made Morgan Rogers’ £117m move to Chelsea look like a bargain

Also, because Mikel Arteta’s Premier League champions Arsenal were in talks for Rogers. But according to reports, Xabi Alonso managed to convince Rogers of a move to Chelsea instead of Arsenal this summer.

Rogers will undergo a medical on Monday before signing a six-year deal with the option of extending that contract until 2033. Of course, £117m is a lot of money, but in the current market, it’s a bargain.

If Sandro Tonali is worth £100m, Rogers is easily worth £117m

Only Neymar, Alexander Isak and Kylian Mbappe have cost more than Rogers’ fee. But this summer has already seen some Premier League clubs pay some wild transfer fees, and Tottenham are right up there.

If £52m for Jan Paul van Hecke was not deemed overpriced, £85m for Mateus Fernandes certainly is. No doubt good players and proven at Premier League level, but for a combined £137m? Very expensive.

Then there is Sandro Tonali. Arguably one of the best central midfielders outside of the top two, Tonali has really made a name for himself at Newcastle. An Italy international, an exquisite passer of the ball.

But no one will have deemed Tonali a £100m player. When Newcastle told Spurs he would cost a nine-figure fee, they will have surely done so without expecting a reply from Roberto De Zerbi’s new side.

Yet, Spurs have blown their transfer record to land Tonali. If he is a £100m player, then Rogers is easily worth the enormous outlay Chelsea are set to spend on him. Not least, because attackers cost more.

It is the hardest thing in football to create and score goals, and yet, in the Premier League, not many no.10’s do it as often or as effortlessly as Rogers. This is one of the Premier League’s very best attackers.

Another reason why Chelsea have given the green light to spend such a fortune is because of player sales. So far, Chelsea have rubber-stamped the sales of four players, with Marc Cucurella’s exit the biggest.

Chelsea will receive an initial £47.5m from Madrid for Cucurella, rising to £51.8m. Andrey Santos’ move to Man United cost Michael Carrick’s men £48m, with £2m more in add-ons. Tyrique George joined Everton.

A £24m deal, with £18m received by Chelsea up front while West Brom paid £4m to sign Jimmy-Jay Morgan after an impressive loan at Peterborough. A total of £117.5m paid to Chelsea in initial fees.

That’s even before considering Man City have paid Chelsea £17m in compensation for Enzo Maresca. From player sales alone this summer, Chelsea have already earned what they will spend on Rogers.

Of course, Chelsea have also paid Atalanta a £47m fee for Marco Palestra, but the fact remains that Chelsea have raked in a huge amount of cash and will continue to do so with more player sales likely.

BlueCo’s model may earn criticism, but it looks as if Chelsea will earn another £300m from player sales this summer as they did the last. Rogers’ fee might be huge, but Chelsea have covered it already.
