Chelsea are on the brink of signing Morgan Rogers in a mammoth £117million move from Aston Villa – with Arsenal set to miss out on the England playmaker.
Rogers, who started in England’s World Cup third-place play-off against France on Saturday, is scheduled for a medical on Monday before putting pen to paper on a six-year deal at Stamford Bridge, with an option for an additional 12 months.
Arsenal had shown interest in the 23-year-old, but new Blues manager Xabi Alonso played a crucial role in convincing him to opt for west London.
Rogers has experienced a meteoric rise at Villa Park since his arrival from Middlesbrough in January 2024, helping propel Villa to a top-four finish and the Europa League last season.

He departs having netted 31 goals in 125 outings under Unai Emery. Villa, who also offloaded Youri Tielemans to Manchester United for £35million earlier this week, believe the price tag represents excellent value.
Middlesbrough will pocket approximately £20m thanks to a sell-on clause inserted when they transferred Rogers to Villa.
The deal marks one of the most substantial transactions during Chelsea owners BlueCo’s four-year tenure and signals the first clear indication that the club have shifted away from their strategy of solely recruiting young, unproven talent. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali suggested towards the latter stages of last season that the club had absorbed valuable lessons from a disappointing campaign, which saw them finish 10th and suffer a heavy defeat to Paris St Germain in the Champions League round of 16, pledging to pursue players capable of mounting a genuine title challenge.
Former Real Madrid midfielder Alonso, who lifted the Champions League trophy twice during his playing career, was brought in partly to attract elite talent to Stamford Bridge.
The capture of Rogers represents arguably the most significant deal the club has secured since Cole Palmer’s switch from Manchester City in 2023, and is poised to break the record transfer fee for a British player.
Rogers is expected to become the fourth summer addition as the Blues reshape their squad, following the arrivals of defender Marco Palestra, striker Emmanuel Emegha and winger Geovany Quenda.
Last month, the club’s efforts to reunite Alonso with Sunderland’s Granit Xhaka proved unsuccessful, with Chelsea refusing to match the Black Cats’ asking price for a player who turns 34 in September.
