Indeed, Rogers is now the most-expensive Englishman ever and the £117m deal is the fourth-biggest transfer in the history of football. He has signed a six-year deal at Chelsea, with the option of a seventh.

The winger has starred for Chelsea’s U18 side, scoring 21 goals and creating seven more in 52 matches. That form has seen him accelerated into Chelsea’s second string, already scoring in just four outings.

It has also caught the attention of several clubs, with Pete O’Rourke reporting that Arsenal, Leeds, Bournemouth, Everton and PSV were all interested. Now, Chelsea have announced his new contract.

They did so via Chelsea’s academy Instagram page, and John Terry was among those to respond. He described Gordon as a “baller” before saying “congratulations mate”, having likely worked with Gordon.

Chelsea have struggled to bring through young, homegrown talent since BlueCo took over from Roman Abramovich in 2022. The quantity of players and youngsters signed has blocked homegrown pathways.

Notable exceptions include Jesse Derry and Josh Acheampong. But even this summer, Acheampong may leave due to a lack of game time, and Derry has been sent on loan to Sporting, where he has impressed.

Chelsea struggle to blood their own, and yet Gordon has decided to sign a new contract despite interest from other sides. Perhaps there is hope for Chelsea’s youngsters with Xabi Alonso placed in charge.
