Cole Palmer and Rio Ferdinand in awe as Chelsea star produces magic out on loan
Chelsea are yet to officially begin their pre-season campaign, but one player on the Blues’ books is seriously enjoying his summer, and it has prompted reaction from Cole Palmer and Rio Ferdinand.
Chelsea finally begin their pre-season campaign on Tuesday when they face Australian A-League side Western Sydney Wanderers. The Blues have been in action twice, but it has come behind closed doors.
How do you rate each of Chelsea’s new signings 1️⃣-🔟?
Comfortable wins against Crawley and then Bromley saw Emmanuel Emegha and Jamie Gittens score in both games. Liam Delap netted in a 3-1 win over Crawley, while Joao Pedro scored against Bromley.
Now, Chelsea will intensify their preparations when they step onto the pitch on Tuesday morning. But another player on the books is on absolute fire, even if he’s not currently wearing a Chelsea shirt.
Cole Palmer and Rio Ferdinand react as Jesse Derry scores
Sporting Lisbon begin their season in a couple of weeks, and that means the Portuguese side are ahead of Chelsea in their pre-season. Derry has played a key part in that, starting with a 4-1 win against Celtic.
Sporting supporters were impressed with Derry’s debut. Then, Derry helped Sporting beat BlueCo’s other club, Strasbourg 7-0, playing a key role in two goals after coming on. Last night, Derry faced Monaco.
Again, he came off the bench, but this time he had a telling impact. The youngster curled a beautiful effort into the far corner to put his side 2-0 up, and the scoreline remained the same at full-time.
Chelsea fans were impressed with Derry on social media. One fan even suggested that he is showing “Ballon d’Or potential” while Geovany Quenda applauded him, with Derry ultimately replacing Quenda.
Derry is already endearing himself to Sporting fans with his cameo performances during pre-season, and last night, he posted on Instagram – including pictures of him using Cole Palmer’s cold celebration.

His caption read: “What dreams are made of. Thank you for the warm welcome Alvalade,” after Derry scored the first goal of his professional career, albeit in a non-competitive friendly. Plenty responded.
Represented by Rio Ferdinand’s New Era agency, the former England defender commented “different” while Palmer posted “that’s it”. Trevoh Chalobah, Romeo Lavia and Shim Mhueka also responded.
Have Chelsea made a mistake allowing Derry to go on loan?
Derry has really impressed since going to Portugal, not only warming himself to supporters on the pitch, but with his post-match interviews following them. He’s even wearing Cristiano Ronaldo’s no.28 shirt.
Who would you rather Chelsea sign, John Stones or Maxence Lacroix?
Obviously, Derry and Chelsea felt it was right to let the England youth international go on loan. Morgan Rogers and Geovany Quenda have arrived and while Alejandro Garnacho has gone, it was the right move.
Derry looks as if he will shine in Portugal, already winning fans over and doing plenty to convince Sporting manager Rui Borges that he should start. When he returns, he will come back a real wonderkid.
Come the end of the season, if Chelsea struggle once again and Derry is firing in the goals and assists, Blues fans may feel it was a mistake. But there is no doubt that Derry has a huge future in West London.
