Man City transfer state of play – signings, Rodri, £100m windfall and what next

Manchester City’s summer transfer business is expected to ramp up in the coming weeks with a number of questions surrounding signings and sales.

The Blues have signed Elliot Anderson in a club-record £116million deal to bolster the midfield but he remains the only senior signing, albeit Enzo Maresca’s side have added promising youngsters to the ranks including highly-rated winger Jeremy Monga from Leicester City.

City remain keen to add another body in midfield, and are interested in Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi amid a £80million price tag. The Blues are also keen to add a winger and a right back who can compete with Matheus Nunes.

But it is outgoings that are arguably more intriguing with considerable speculation surrounding the future of Rodri, who is into the final 12 months of his deal at the Etihad and has yet to sign an extension with a contract offer on the table. Real Madrid want to sign the newly-crowned World Cup Golden Ball winner but City would be loathe to lose a player so critical on and off the pitch, particularly after seeing key dressing room influences Bernardo Silva and John Stones depart this summer.

There are question marks over several fringe players with City potentially raising a significant amount of income. Leeds United are keen on James Trafford and are in talks with the Blues over a deal that would likely see City net around £40million and make profit on the goalkeeper’s sale for the second time, having only re-signed him from Burnley a year ago.

Savinho is another likely departure with long-term admirers Tottenham still keen on the Brazil international. The winger had interest from Spurs last summer and was open to a move before penning a new deal at the Etihad. But Roberto De Zerbi’s men have rekindled their interest and are still pursuing a move for the 22-year-old.

De Zerbi, speaking this week from Spurs’ pre-season tour in New Zealand, admitted that attacking signings are the priority for his side with a deal of around £60million likely to secure Savinho.

“The target now is to complete the attacking positions,’ De Zerbi said. “I think to start the new project we need another couple of important players, for sure. It’s not finished yet.”

City must also make a decision on the future of Jack Grealish, who is closing in on a return to full fitness after a season-ending injury during his otherwise successful loan spell with Everton last term. The Toffees remain keen on the 30-year-old and although Maresca spoke of his admiration for Grealish during his press conference on Friday, an Etihad exit looks likely. The first indication will be next week when City announce their tour squad for their trip to Asia. Including Grealish could potentially be a significant marker in the winger’s short term future with his City contact expiring next summer.

City also have to make calls on the future of a clutch of players including Rico Lewis and Nico Gonzalez, while Kalvin Phillips has no long-term future at the Eithad.

Further loan moves will also be considered for youngsters with Max Alleyne likely to depart temporarily, while Stephen Mfuni, Claudio Echeverri, Vitor Reis, Juma Bah, Josh Wilson-Esbrand, Issa Kabore, Divine Mukasa, Divin Mubama and Jeremy Monga are all potential loan exits.
