Not just there to make up the numbers or hand out water bottles.
Why Welbeck makes sense at Stamford Bridge
Then you look at Danny Welbeck’s year with Brighton, simply sensational stuff. 13 goals and two assists over 40 matches across all competitions. Dial it into the Premier League specifically, and it reads 13 goals and one assist in 37 outings, at 35 years old.
That is not the record of a striker winding down his career in the sun. It is a forward who found a second wind, churning out figures that blokes ten years his junior would give their right arm for. Missing out on England’s final World Cup squad despite that patch of form had to sting. Badly. Yet it takes nothing away from what he pulled off every Saturday domestically.
Alonso has already got João Pedro and Morgan Rogers to freshen up the front line, building a squad with real muscle and depth. Slotting Welbeck in as a battle-hardened option up top is sound business. Straightforward squad management. The guy scores goals. Week in, week out.
The verdict
There is clear logic to both deals, especially Welbeck. His strike rate on the South Coast was top drawer last term, and Chelsea desperately need players who know where the back of the net is. Henderson feels like a tougher pitch to fans off the bat because of his age. Alonso has made it clear he rates experience and tactical awareness over pure athletic burst anyway. These moves won’t set social media ablaze, but they make Chelsea a far trickier proposition to play against.
