Chelsea have booked their place in the FA Cup final with a tough win over Leeds. But, the fans are questioning the impact of Alejandro Garnacho.

Fans unhappy with Alejandro Garnacho despite key Cup progress

Chelsea’s victory over Leeds should have been a moment to change the story after a poor run of form. But, the performance of Alejandro Garnacho has shifted the spotlight in a negative direction. The Blues’ winger struggled to make any impact in the game and was substituted in the 71st minute. That was a decision that got loud approval from fans inside the stadium and across social media.

This reaction did not come out of nowhere, as the Blues had entered the semi-final under pressure. This comes having lost seven of their previous eight matches across competitions. The only bright spot in that period was their FA Cup quarter-final win. That now feels like the only good thing rather than a turning point. The exit of Liam Rosenior added further instability in the squad. That left caretaker boss Calum McFarlane to bring in some results.

Given that, McFarlane delivered the result that was needed. However, as per reports, Garnacho’s display reopened deeper issues about the club’s recruitment strategy and squad balance. His failure to create chances or move past the Leeds defense is seen as a big issue. That has limited Chelsea’s attacking rhythm throughout the match.

‘Generational waste’ label brings transfer pressure

The backlash increased online, where several fans did not hold back in their comments, with one viral post calling Garnacho a “generational waste.” Others also shared that feeling, demanding he be sold quickly.

As per FotMob, Garnacho got a 6.6 rating during the semi-final. That makes him one of the lowest-rated players on the football pitch during that game. He completed just 78% of his passes and failed to make a single key pass or shot on target. These numbers show the lack of attacking effort expected from a player in his position.

Looking at his overall season, the winger has struggled for form. He only has 4 goals and 3 assists in 28 games across all competitions, as per FBref. For a player signed for £40 million from Manchester United, those numbers do not seem good. That is especially in a Chelsea side searching for reliable attacking output.

The reaction from fans shows a growing anger. This comes after the club’s recent spending and the need for good results. Garnacho’s performance against Leeds has brought him under huge criticism at a key stage of the season.

Chelsea already planning exit as replacements lined up

Behind the scenes, the west London club seems to be moving quickly. The Blues are reportedly open to selling Garnacho less than a year after his arrival. They can try to recover most of the £40m fee spent on him. They can lower the financial damage while making space for new players.

The club has found other potential options, including Nico Williams, Morgan Rogers, and Yan Diomande. All of these stars can offer different attacking options. In addition, the Premier League club has entered the race for Anthony Gordon as well. The Englishman’s form at Newcastle United have got plenty of interest from top sides.

That said, Chelsea’s decision-makers are not willing to wait for long. This comes especially with the team preparing for a big final. For now, the club remains focused on the FA Cup final.
