Chelsea’s need to strengthen at centre-back is no secret. Levi Colwill got injured in pre-season and without him, the Blues have looked directionless at the back. Trevoh Chalobah is the only one to show some consistency. And even then, most believe he is not good enough to be starting for a top-level Premier League club.

Wesley Fofana has been average. Thankfully, he has stayed away from injuries and been available. For some reason, Josh Acheampong has not been given chances despite impressing when on the pitch. The likes of Benoit Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo just don’t seem to be good enough. And Jorrel Hato is more of a left-back then a centre-back, although his upturn in form in recent months is promising.

Anyways, it is quite clear that Chelsea need to sign a centre-back or two this summer. One of the players they have been linked with is Jacobo Ramon.

The defender has been a standout for Cesc Fabregas’ Como FC and one of the best centre-backs in Serie A. But Real Madrid are believed to hold a €8 million buyback clause for him. So, the ball is in their court.

Real Madrid appear to make Jacobo Ramon decision

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea are maintaining regular contact with Real Madrid over Ramon. Sources indicate that the centre-back is now expected to return to the Spanish capital, with the club keen to integrate their young players into their future plans. The message is clear, Los Blancos are not prepared to let their brightest talents slip away.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Chelsea in the centre-back position. But it looks like Ramon is not someone they will be signing this summer.

And to be honest, he might not have been the right fit either. The club need someone who has a lot more experience and is ready to contribute from the get-go.

Chelsea do not need Ramon at this time

Chelsea’s defence has been lacking a real leader since Thiago Silva left the club. One could argue that the likes of Chalobah and Tosin have some experience under their belt. And that is true.

At the same time, neither has ever been a top-level, world-class defender. They are more suitable as squad players to be very frank.

If Chelsea want to compete for the biggest prizes in football, they need to bring in a world-class centre-back. Just look at Arsenal’s defence. That is why they are consistently competing at the top of the Premier League while the Blues can’t even qualify for the Champions League.
