Sanchez has received a lot of criticism this season after making some high-profile mistakes, which have not escaped Cech.

However, Cech still thinks Sanchez has “huge potential”, though he has warned the Spaniard that he needs to improve his consistency and decision-making.

In an interview with The Athletic, the retired Czech Republic international said: “Rob, you can see, he’s got a huge, huge potential, and there are games where you see it. You see his ability, his shot-stopping ability, and the saves he can produce at times.

“But there are things for him to work on as well, like his consistency. He has games where he obviously makes wrong decisions, and as a goalkeeper, you know, these decisions are really visible.”

Last time out, Sanchez had a very good match, making some big saves that helped Chelsea to beat Leeds United 1-0 and make it to the FA Cup final.

After the semi-final, Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane hailed Sanchez as “world-class”. If the 28-year-old can show more of that and cut out the silly mistakes, he really could fulfil his immense potential at Stamford Bridge. You can clearly see that in the games where Sanchez has taken fewer risks.

Cech has also been discussing another Chelsea goalkeeper, Sanchez’s deputy Filip Jorgensen.

Like the Spain international, Jorgensen has also come into the team and made some massive errors when called upon.

On the former Villarreal man, he said: “The situation with Filip Jorgensen is an interesting one because every time he got a chance to come into the team a few times, he got injured and things did not happen as well for him as he would have liked.”

Chelsea have Mike Penders on their books, and he could become the team’s No.1 one day. Next season may come too soon, though, which is good news for Sanchez.

It is thought that some at Chelsea feel it is too early to promote Penders to No.1, so he may have to bide his time a little.

It remains to be seen whether Sanchez can become one or not, but Chelsea’s next manager needs a reliable goalkeeper if he is to turn the team into title challengers again.
