Chelsea’s bad start has got even worse after a terrible mistake from Malo Gusto gave Nottingham Forest a penalty.

Chelsea were a goal down to Nottingham Forest at home after just two minutes. They’re now two goals down after 15.

The mistake for the first goal was collective – multiple players let their man run, each of them expected someone else to the defending for them. We’ve seen plenty of that from this group of players. There’s no leadership, on or off the field.

Chelsea compound team mistake with individual error

This second was a pure individual mistake. Malo Gusto made the utterly crazy decision to pull Taiyo Awoniyi’s shirt, the VAR spotted and called the ref over. After a couple of viewings, he gave the spot kick. Igor Jesus stepped up and smashed it down the middle to double his side’s lead.

It’s completely braindead, totally inexcusable. Unless something changes dramatically, the half time reaction at Stamford Bridge is going to be intensely negative when the whistle blows.

In other news…

The first goal was just as stupid. Chelsea left huge gaps in their defence meaning that Dilane Bakwa could pick out a cross and Taiwo Awoniyi could head home after just a few minutes.

Mateus Fernandes is going to be a hot property this summer, and while Chelsea are in the mix, we’re not sure they’re favourites.
