“Does not look the same player”
Cole Palmer’s dreadful form is at the heart of Chelsea’s bad season, but it’s a real question of cause and effect.

When Cole Palmer stepped up to take a penalty for Chelsea against Nottingham Forest yesterday, we’re sure many fans had a bad feeling.
Despite Palmer’s superb spot kick record, it’s been one of those seasons where things just go wrong. And that’s especially true of the attacker. In a team where nobody is playing close to their potential, he’s possibly fallen furthest. His confidence is shot, and when he stepped up there was an almost inevitable sense he would miss.
Palmer would be dropped – if Chelsea had any other option
There’s been talk for weeks about him being dropped, and right now it feels like he’s only in the team because of a lack of alternative. The Sun’s Lloyd Canfield said that Palmer “does not look the same player we saw under Mauricio Pochettino and Enzo Maresca at times.”
“But even since he has been fit and playing regularly again, he looks well off the pace.”
His finishing has been bad and he can’t seem to beat a man. Physically, technically, mentally, he’s totally broken.

Caretaker Calum McFarlane keeps protecting his players, and we’re really not sure why.
Another bleak part of a dreadful afternoon was Jesse Derry getting taken off injured after a horrible clash of heads. We now at least have an update from him.
