Arsenal legend Cesc Fabregas given ‘green light’ to become next Chelsea manager

Cesc Fabregas is among the leading candidates to replace Liam Rosenior as Chelsea manager, and Como president Mirwan Suwarso has confirmed the Spaniard will be free to leave for the role

Como president Mirwan Suwarso has granted Cesc Fabregas permission to take over as Chelsea’s next manager. Fabregas, 38, is amongst the frontrunners to replace Liam Rosenior, who was dismissed on Wednesday after merely three months at the helm following a sequence of five straight Premier League losses.

The Blues have appointed Calum McFarlane on a temporary basis until the conclusion of this campaign and intend to make a permanent hire in the summer. Should Chelsea opt to offer the position to Fabregas, Como will not block his departure.

“If that makes him happy, that’s him,” Suwarso told City AM. “You want your employees to stay with you for as long as possible but at the end of the day we don’t own him and he’s free to go to Chelsea if he wishes.”

The Como chief also revealed that it’s feasible Fabregas could retain his shareholding in the Italian outfit should he leave.

The Spaniard owns a minority stake in Como alongside Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, with the club chiefly controlled by Indonesian billionaires, reports the Mirror.

Suwarso explained that ‘as long as Fabregas doesn’t leave to an Italian club in competition’, there are arrangements in place for him to continue as a stakeholder.

“Business is business, ideas are ideas,” he added. “We have to see things in a way that makes sense, right? It’s common sense.”

Fabregas, who spent four-and-a-half years at Chelsea as a player, was handed the Como job straight after their promotion to Serie A in 2024.

The 38-year-old concluded his playing career at the club before transitioning into an assistant coach role, including a stint as caretaker.

With Como positioned fifth in the Serie A table following a top-half finish last season, and narrowly falling short of the Coppa Italia final this week, Fabregas’ efforts haven’t escaped attention.

The former midfielder was recently linked with becoming Italy’s new manager, but Fabregas remains concentrated on club football for the time being.

“Maybe someday, but for now I’m too much of a coach,” he told Marca.

“When I say I’m a coach, I need to be on the pitch every day with the players, with the youngsters, preparing for the match.

“Working for a national team would be a bit boring for me right now. In the future, when I’m a bit older, who knows.”
