Club President Tells Top Managerial Target He Is “Free To Go To Chelsea”

Como president Mirwan Suwarso has said he won’t stand in Cesc Fabregas’s way if he wants to take the Chelsea job.

The former Blues midfielder is among the frontrunners to take the position following Liam Rosenior’s departure, and asked whether he would allow Fabregas to make the move to Stamford Bridge, Suwarso replied:

“If that makes him happy, that’s him. You want your employees to stay with you for as long as possible, but at the end of the day, we don’t own him and he’s free to go to Chelsea if he wishes.”

Fabregas has been Como’s head coach for the last two seasons. He guided them to a 10th place in their first campaign after being promoted to the Italian top flight. They are currently sitting in 5th.

Is Fabregas interested in leaving Como?

While returning to Stamford Bridge would surely be a big draw for the Spaniard, he has put down some roots in Italy.

As well as being head coach, Fabregas is a minor shareholder in Como, so he has a greater interest than most in ensuring their continued success.

The 38-year-old will also be wary about taking the position at Chelsea, considering the difficulties that previous coaches have faced. He will likely want certain assurances about the level of involvement he will have in decision-making for recruitment and other matters.

Who are the bookies’ favourites for the Chelsea job?

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola currently has the shortest odds, but there are question marks over whether he will stay in England when he leaves the Cherries this summer.

Fabregas and another former Chelsea player, Felipe Luis, are next among the runners and riders, with Fulham head coach Marco Silva and Coventry manager Frank Lampard also among the potential contenders.
